Terms of Service

Please read these terms carefully. Section 11 contains a binding individual arbitration agreement and class action waiver that affect your legal rights.

1. Acceptance of terms

By creating an account, accessing, or using Loom (the "Service," "we," "us," or "our"), you agree to these Terms of Service and our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

2. Independent service & university non-affiliation

Loom is an independent student-built service. Loom is not affiliated with, sponsored by, endorsed by, licensed by, or operated by the University of Washington, its Board of Regents, or any other college, university, or academic institution.

References to campus names or ".edu" domains are purely descriptive and used only to identify the campus community you belong to. Your university is not responsible for any part of Loom, including its matching, communications, or any offline interaction.

3. Eligibility: 18+ verified students only

You must be at least 18 years old to register or use Loom. By creating an account, you represent and warrant that:

  • you are at least 18 years old;
  • you have never been convicted of a felony, a sexual offense, or any crime involving violence or harassment;
  • you are not required to register as a sex offender with any government authority;
  • you hold a valid, active .edu email address issued to you personally;
  • you will maintain only one account and will not share or transfer it.

Falsifying your age or student status is a material breach of these Terms and results in immediate termination and may be reported to authorities.

4. How Loom works

  • The 8pm drop: matches are generated by our algorithm and delivered nightly at 8:00 PM Pacific. Loom is not a public directory; browsing, searching, or scraping profiles is prohibited.
  • Focus Mode: a mutual green light opens a private 1:1 chat. While it is open, nightly drops pause for both people.
  • Green lights are final: they cannot be undone. You can end any connection at any time with "End Connection."
  • Inactivity: chats with no activity for 48 hours close automatically.
  • Campus minimums: drops only run once enough students on a campus have joined. We may pause, change, or discontinue drops at any time.

5. Assumption of risk & no background checks

Loom does not conduct criminal background checks, sex offender registry checks, or identity screening beyond email verification, and does not verify the statements users make.

You are solely responsible for your interactions with other users, online and offline, and you assume all risks of those interactions, including physical injury, emotional distress, and property loss.

Safety tips: meet in public, well-lit places; tell a friend where you are going; arrange your own transportation; never share financial information, your room number, or passwords.

6. Emergencies, Title IX & reporting

Loom is not a university reporting channel, mandated reporter, or Title IX office. Ending a connection or contacting us does not notify your school, campus police, or law enforcement.

If you are in danger or are the victim of a crime, call 911 or your campus police immediately.

7. Code of conduct (zero tolerance)

You agree not to:

  • harass, bully, stalk, threaten, intimidate, defame, or demean anyone;
  • send sexually explicit content, non-consensual imagery, or depictions of violence;
  • post hate speech or content that discriminates based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or other protected status;
  • solicit money, advertise, spam, or promote other services;
  • scrape, crawl, or extract data, or use bots or automated scripts;
  • reverse engineer, probe, or interfere with the Service, its security, or its matching system;
  • impersonate anyone, create fake accounts, or use another person's .edu email;
  • record, screenshot, or share another user's messages or information without their consent to harass or expose them;
  • use the Service for any unlawful purpose.

We may investigate, suspend, or permanently terminate any account at any time, for any reason, with or without notice.

8. User content

You own the content you submit (answers, profile text, messages). You grant Loom a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide license to store, process, and display it solely to operate and improve the Service, including generating matching embeddings. You are responsible for your content and represent you have the right to share it.

Loom is an interactive computer service under 47 U.S.C. § 230 and is not the publisher or speaker of content provided by users.

9. Disclaimer of warranties

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title, and non-infringement. We do not guarantee that you will receive matches, that any match will be compatible, that algorithmic or AI-based scores are accurate, or that the Service will be uninterrupted, secure, or error-free.

10. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Loom and its creators, operators, and agents will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for loss of data, goodwill, or profits, or for any bodily injury, emotional distress, or harm arising from your use of the Service or your communications or meetings with other users. Our total liability for all claims will not exceed the greater of $50 USD or the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim.

Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations, so some of these may not apply to you.

11. Arbitration & class action waiver

Informal resolution first. Before filing a claim, you agree to contact us at legal@getloom.app and try in good faith to resolve the dispute for at least 30 days.

Binding arbitration. Any unresolved dispute arising from these Terms or the Service will be resolved by binding individual arbitration administered by the American Arbitration Association under its Consumer Arbitration Rules. The Federal Arbitration Act governs this section. Either party may bring an individual claim in small claims court instead.

You and Loom may bring claims only in an individual capacity, not as a plaintiff or class member in any class, consolidated, or representative proceeding.

30-day opt-out. You may opt out of arbitration by emailing legal@getloom.app within 30 days of creating your account with your name, account email, and a statement that you opt out.

Governing law. These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Washington, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Any matter not subject to arbitration will be brought exclusively in the state or federal courts in King County, Washington.

12. Indemnification

You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Loom and its creators, operators, and agents from any claims, losses, liabilities, and expenses (including attorneys' fees) arising from your use of the Service, your content, your violation of these Terms or anyone's rights, or your conduct toward other users online or offline.

13. Intellectual property

Loom's name, wordmark, design, code, and matching system belong to Loom. You receive a personal, revocable, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the Service for non-commercial purposes.

14. Termination

You may stop using Loom and request account deletion at any time. We may suspend or terminate your access at any time. Sections 5, 6 and 8–15 survive termination.

15. General

We may update these Terms; continued use after an update means you accept it, and we will flag material changes in the app. If any provision is unenforceable, the rest remains in effect. Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver. These Terms and the Privacy Policy are the entire agreement between you and Loom. You may not assign these Terms; we may.
